Warmer temperatures are something that most people, including seniors in assisted living facilities, look forward to after the long dark winter months. However, seniors are more prone to the harmful effects of summer heat and are at risk of dehydration.
How can your loved ones enjoy a warm afternoon with family or their friends outside? Summer activities should not be a thing of the past for senior adults.
Getting out has plenty of benefits for seniors. With careful planning and choosing of activities, your loved ones can still head outdoors with a lesser risk of summer-related health issues.
Staying Safe in the Heat
Staying outside is known to have physical, emotional, and mental benefits. Sun exposure is a good source of Vitamin D needed for healthy bones and muscles. Research also shows that sunlight can improve mood and cognitive function.
Moreover, being out is an opportunity to socialize and bond with other residents in assisted living facilities. Outdoor activities are also a great way to enjoy nature and meet new people.
Keep a bottle of water handy to stay hydrated during the summer months. As we age, it is difficult for the skin to keep hydrated and water is the best source to keep the skin healthy. Incorporate water-rich fruits and vegetables like cantaloupe, berries, oranges, celery, and cucumber into your diet.
Always use sunscreen protection with at least 30 SPF to shield the skin from harmful UV rays. In addition, keep your skin moisturized with the use of recommended moisturizing products.
Moisturizing every day can keep the signs of dryness due to the skin’s enhanced capacity to hold water. Moisturizer is also necessary to shield the skin from environmental damage.
Apart from sunscreen products, use appropriate clothing when doing outdoor activities. Wear shades, hats, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts as added layer of protection. Besides, avoid going out during the hottest hours of the day – usually, 10 AM to 4 PM.

Celebrating World Alzheimer’s Day in Facilities for Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s is one of the most common types of dementia, a brain disorder that affects memory and the ability to perform even the simplest tasks. In America, the disease is responsible for 60% – 80% of dementia cases and is one of the leading causes of death. The world celebrates World Alzheimer’s Day every 21st of September. This annual event is to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s and find ways to fight the effects of this brain disorder. This day is a perfect opportunity for facilities for Alzheimer’s, patients, caregivers, and families to join in the fight to increase the level of awareness, raise funds, and ways to improve the quality of treatments and the lives of Alzheimer’s patients.
World Alzheimer’s Day
Alzheimer’s was named after German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer who first identified the disease in 1901.
Alzheimer’s is among the leading causes of death in America and with an estimated 6.5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s to date. Researchers expect the number of Alzheimer’s patients to grow to 12.7 million by 2050 as the American population grows older.
World Alzheimer’s Day came from Alzheimer’s Disease International in 1994, during the 10th anniversary of ADI (Alzheimer’s Disease International.) The group was founded in 1984 to support victims and conduct outreach activities to educate people about the effects of Alzheimer’s.
During the annual celebration, ADI coordinates with other member organizations and associations globally to spread information and awareness in dealing with the stigma about the disease. Since the inception of the globally acknowledge Alzheimer’s Day, the impact of its efforts is increasing.
Ways to Celebrate in Facilities for Alzheimer’s
For this year’s Alzheimer’s Day event, facilities for Alzheimer’s can organize activities for everyone. Here are some ideas and ways to show support in our own little way.
The Power of Family
Reach out to your family members who are in facilities for Alzheimer’s. A simple text message, phone call, or a visit to the facility on that day can go a long way. Share a brunch or dinner and have a fun conversation to remind your loved ones that they matter. Or add simple activities that will help them recall important life or family events. A simple gesture will help them feel valued.
Share Your Story
Share your story with friends, and family, and spread awareness through social media. Use the Internet to bridge the information gap and combat the stigma around Alzheimer’s disease.
Most people think that Alzheimer’s is an age-related disease. The lack of information remains to be a global problem that needs serious action. Sharing your story can help break the misinformation and the stigma.
Donate
Encourage your family and friends to donate any amount they can to fund Alzheimer’s research. Donations help Alzheimer’s research organization continue their work in improving the lives of Alzheimer’s patients.
Participate
Facilities for Alzheimer’s can participate in events organized by local Alzheimer’s associations. Staff, management, and stakeholders are also free to create their ways to celebrate this important day.

What to Ask While Touring Assisted Living Facilities
There comes a time in life when assisted living facilities become your best option for a healthy, happy life. Growing old is inevitable. At some point, you’ll need a place with assistance for activities that may be difficult to complete on your own.
Why assisted living is the best option
Assisted living facilities are for individuals who need help with daily activities but are still able to do most things at home. Being in assisted living, you’ll have your own apartment or room with shared common areas.
You also have the option for the types of services that you need depending on your condition. You can book housekeeping, laundry, personal care, and even help with your medications. It all depends on the type of arrangement that you want and what an assisted living facility offers in your area.
What to ask when touring assisted living facilities
As you check on your options, it’s very important to ask the right questions to help you pick the right assisted living facility for your needs:
How is your team trained?
The staff will play an important role in your care in assisted living, so it’s very important to ask the type of training they go through to make sure they have the skills to help you while you’re in the facility.
How do you welcome a new resident?
Although assisted living isn’t far from a typical home, entering it for the first time can be quite intimidating. A good quality assisted living facility will give you all the support you’ll need to adjust to this new environment and feel comfortable as you transition into your new home.
Do you have staff available 24/7?
You’ll never know when you’ll need assistance during your stay, so it’s very important to find a facility that has staff working day and night to ensure that all your needs are met every time.
How many residents do you have?
A good quality assisted living facility should only have enough residents with a good staff-to-patient ratio to be able to cater to all their needs well. You don’t want to be living in a facility that doesn’t have any available staff whenever you need them.
Moving to one of the assisted living facilities in your area is a huge step and will mean big changes in your routine and life in general.
That is why it’s very important to ask the right questions and make decisions based on your specific needs. The goal here is to ensure that you get to live the best quality of life by having professionals to assist your needs without taking away your freedom to do the things you want.

Celebrating National Senior Citizens Day in Memory Care Assisted Living
We all have an elderly person who we love and value in our life. It could be our parents, grandparents, or friends who have given us wisdom, guidance, and care. If there’s one day that we could celebrate these individuals and honor them, it’s August 21, National Senior Citizens Day. Celebrating National Senior Citizens Day in Memory Care Assisted Living is a great way to keep spirits high.
Celebrating National Senior Citizens Day
In 1988, President Ronald Reagan declared every 21st of August as National Senior Citizens Day. This was to not only honor the elderly but raise awareness for issues that are affecting their quality of life.
He proclaimed the following. “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older—places in which older people can participate to the fullest and find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.”
These individuals, some of whom are in memory care assisted living, are important community members and many are still part of the workforce.
Thanks to a better healthcare system and more programs, they are now living better lives and enjoying their later years.
Activities for National Senior Citizens Day in Memory Care Assisted Living
Plan something special for your loved one this National Senior Citizens Day by trying these activities:
A dinner date.
Volunteer for a day.
Learn a new skill together.
At the end of the day, honoring the people who built the foundation for us is very important. These elderly individuals have been ahead of us and worked hard when they were younger to set us up for a better life. So, it’s only fitting that we also honor them at least once in a year, so they know that all their efforts are valued.

How to Take Care of Aging Skin During the Summer for Assisted Living Residents
Warm weather is also associated with fun outdoor activities. And for senior adults in assisted living communities, summer is an opportunity to bask under the sun. However, as people grow older, the skin grows thinner and more sensitive to sun exposure, making it necessary to take precautionary measures to be protected from harmful UVA and UVB rays.
Fortunately, there are several ways and means to shield the skin from sunburns, skin aging, loss of elasticity, wrinkles, or worst skin cancer. Be sure to remember these tips when going out or share these with your loved ones.
Tips For Aging Skin Care for Assisted Living Residents
Stay Hydrated
Water is essential to keep bodily functions and more essential as we grow older to keep the skin to stay hydrated, particularly during the hot summer months.
During summer, it is recommended to drink at least 2 and a half liters of water. Although water is the best way to stay hydrated, watermelon has high water content, celery, and cucumber.
Apply Sunscreen
Make sure to regularly apply sunscreen or at least every 90 minutes to keep the sunscreen protection effective. Choose a product that has at least 30 SPF or higher.
Moisturize
Always have a moisturizer handy to restore the skin’s protection from the UV rays and prevent it from drying out. Encourage loved ones in assisted living care to incorporate to keep the skin moisturized.
Consult Your Doctor
When taking medications, consult with your doctor first as some prescriptions may cause sensitivity to sun exposure. Ask for recommendations on how to still enjoy the summer months without the worries of negative side effects.
SPF Recommendations
With proper care and the right product, your skin can still look young and healthy. For seniors in assisted living, selecting the right SPF adds an extra layer of protection.
The SPF should be at least 30. A facial cream or sunscreen lotion or spray with SPF protection of 30 filters 97% of UVB rays while SPF 50 filters about 98%. Let us say if your skin burns under the sun in 15 minutes without sunscreen, SPF 30 product provides skin protection against sun damage for 450 minutes. That is based on 15 minutes multiplied by 30 SPF.
Sunscreen products should be waterproof or sweatproof and must be applied 30 minutes before going out. As mentioned, sunscreen must be re-applied every 90 minutes but is done more frequently when sweating or swimming. Or better yet, read the manufacturer’s recommendations and instructions on how to properly use the product.
Other than exercising these tips on how to take care of the skin for seniors in assisted living, the seniors can reduce their risk of skin damage by wearing protective clothing such as pants, long-sleeved tops, shades, and wide-brimmed hats.
Even with the appropriate clothing and sun protection, remember to seek shade when necessary. Lastly, avoid peak exposures usually between 10 AM and 2 PM.

Father’s Day is an important occasion where we honor our father figures for everything that they have done for us. It is the day when we are extra thoughtful because we want them to know we care. However, planning on what to do and what to give can be a challenge if your dad, uncle, or friend is in senior housing. For most senior adults in senior homes, the gift of time from family the most treasured present that will be treasured forever.
Now that Father’s Day is approaching, what can you do with your loved one on that day?
Father’s Day is Just Around the Corner
Father’s Day has been celebrated as St. Joseph’s Day every 19th of March since the middle ages for Catholic countries in Europe.
In the United States, it is celebrated every third Sunday of June since 1910. Since then, many regions and countries in the world adopted the yearly celebration, but on various dates while some have maintained their traditions of honoring the pillars of the family.
The celebration of fatherhood in Catholic Europe dates to 1508. This was commonly celebrated on March 19 as the feast of St. Joseph, referred to in Catholicism as the “Nourisher of the Lord” and the recognized father of Jesus according to Southern Europe tradition.
The customary celebration was then brought by the Spanish and Portuguese to America which was actively supported by the Catholic Church. The Coptic Orthodox Church also celebrates fatherhood on St. Joseph’s Day.
Until today, fatherhood is celebrated worldwide every March 19, but on the third Sunday in June each year. This year, fathers in senior housing and the rest of the world will be honored on Sunday, June 19, 2022.

The Importance of Recognizing Mental Health in Senior Housing
Millions of people around the world are struggling with mental health issues and people in senior housing are no exception. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and brings light to the challenges of mental illness and the importance of treatment.
The Importance of Mental Health for Seniors
Mental health is crucial in every stage of life but especially during the later years. As seniors step into late adulthood, many struggle to cope with the changes in their lives. Some of these changes include physical changes, loss of work, moving, and dealing with different medical conditions.
This can be very frustrating for anyone. This frustration can easily lead to anxiety and eventually, depression if not properly addressed.
According to the CDC, at least 7 million Americans over the age of 65 suffer from depression each year.
Some of the most common signs that a senior has mental health issues include a shift in mood, eating and sleeping habits, anger and irritability, and threat to harm self or others.
With that number, there’s a pressing need to highlight mental health as part of the healthcare goals for seniors. By having the right guidance and support, they will be able to adapt to life changes more easily, so they can enjoy their years in senior housing without battling anxiety and depression.
Different Mental Health Exercises in Senior Housing
To help seniors in senior housing battle mental health challenges, here are some exercises they can enjoy:
Taking on crafts.
Doing puzzles.
Gardening.
Mental health is a crucial topic that everyone should talk about not only during Mental Health Awareness Month but every day.
With so many people suffering from mental illness, it’s about time that we give importance to our mental health, especially for those individuals who are living in senior housing and struggle with anxiety and depression on almost a daily basis.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia Diagnosis | Fallbrook Memory Care Facility
The term dementia covers several disorders. Each shows a decline in cognitive function that leads to changes in personality, memory, daily performance, or communication skills. Alzheimer’s on the other hand, is the most common type of dementia.
Patients that show symptoms of memory loss may be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, mixed dementia, Huntington’s disease, or Parkinson’s dementia.
Being the most common type of dementia, Alzheimer’s takes up 60-80% of all dementia cases. Although commonly observed in senior adults from 65 years and up, Alzheimer’s is also noted in the younger population with about 200,000 cases. And up to now, researchers are still working on determining what causes Alzheimer’s.
Can the Seasons Affect Alzheimer’s and Dementia?
Yes, particularly during the cold winter months. The yearly change of season especially when days are shorter severely impacts patients in Fallbrook Memory Care Facility. The extended hours of darkness can cause increased agitation, confusion, depression, irritability, wandering, and sleep disturbance.
