How to Take Care of Aging Skin During the Summer for Assisted Living Residents

Warm weather is also associated with fun outdoor activities. And for senior adults in assisted living communities, summer is an opportunity to bask under the sun. However, as people grow older, the skin grows thinner and more sensitive to sun exposure, making it necessary to take precautionary measures to be protected from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Fortunately, there are several ways and means to shield the skin from sunburns, skin aging, loss of elasticity, wrinkles, or worst skin cancer. Be sure to remember these tips when going out or share these with your loved ones.

Tips For Aging Skin Care for Assisted Living Residents

Stay Hydrated

Water is essential to keep bodily functions and more essential as we grow older to keep the skin to stay hydrated, particularly during the hot summer months.

During summer, it is recommended to drink at least 2 and a half liters of water. Although water is the best way to stay hydrated, watermelon has high water content, celery, and cucumber.

Apply Sunscreen

Make sure to regularly apply sunscreen or at least every 90 minutes to keep the sunscreen protection effective. Choose a product that has at least 30 SPF or higher.

Moisturize

Always have a moisturizer handy to restore the skin’s protection from the UV rays and prevent it from drying out. Encourage loved ones in assisted living care to incorporate to keep the skin moisturized.

Consult Your Doctor

When taking medications, consult with your doctor first as some prescriptions may cause sensitivity to sun exposure. Ask for recommendations on how to still enjoy the summer months without the worries of negative side effects.

SPF Recommendations

With proper care and the right product, your skin can still look young and healthy. For seniors in assisted living, selecting the right SPF adds an extra layer of protection.

The SPF should be at least 30. A facial cream or sunscreen lotion or spray with SPF protection of 30 filters 97% of UVB rays while SPF 50 filters about 98%. Let us say if your skin burns under the sun in 15 minutes without sunscreen, SPF 30 product provides skin protection against sun damage for 450 minutes. That is based on 15 minutes multiplied by 30 SPF.

Sunscreen products should be waterproof or sweatproof and must be applied 30 minutes before going out. As mentioned, sunscreen must be re-applied every 90 minutes but is done more frequently when sweating or swimming. Or better yet, read the manufacturer’s recommendations and instructions on how to properly use the product.

Other than exercising these tips on how to take care of the skin for seniors in assisted living, the seniors can reduce their risk of skin damage by wearing protective clothing such as pants, long-sleeved tops, shades, and wide-brimmed hats.

Even with the appropriate clothing and sun protection, remember to seek shade when necessary. Lastly, avoid peak exposures usually between 10 AM and 2 PM.

Stay Cool This Summer with These Heat-Friendly Activities For Assisted Living Facilities

Warmer temperatures are something that most people, including seniors in assisted living facilities, look forward to after the long dark winter months. However, seniors are more prone to the harmful effects of summer heat and are at risk of dehydration.

How can your loved ones enjoy a warm afternoon with family or their friends outside? Summer activities should not be a thing of the past for senior adults.

Getting out has plenty of benefits for seniors. With careful planning and choosing of activities, your loved ones can still head outdoors with a lesser risk of summer-related health issues.

Staying Safe in the Heat

Staying outside is known to have physical, emotional, and mental benefits. Sun exposure is a good source of Vitamin D needed for healthy bones and muscles. Research also shows that sunlight can improve mood and cognitive function.

Moreover, being out is an opportunity to socialize and bond with other residents in assisted living facilities. Outdoor activities are also a great way to enjoy nature and meet new people.

Keep a bottle of water handy to stay hydrated during the summer months. As we age, it is difficult for the skin to keep hydrated and water is the best source to keep the skin healthy. Incorporate water-rich fruits and vegetables like cantaloupe, berries, oranges, celery, and cucumber into your diet.

Always use sunscreen protection with at least 30 SPF to shield the skin from harmful UV rays. In addition, keep your skin moisturized with the use of recommended moisturizing products.

Moisturizing every day can keep the signs of dryness due to the skin’s enhanced capacity to hold water. Moisturizer is also necessary to shield the skin from environmental damage.

Apart from sunscreen products, use appropriate clothing when doing outdoor activities. Wear shades, hats, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts as added layer of protection. Besides, avoid going out during the hottest hours of the day – usually, 10 AM to 4 PM.

Activity Ideas for Assisted Living Facilities

Spending time outdoors is a fun activity during the summer months. Senior residents in assisted living facilities can physically, mentally, and socially benefit from summer activities.

Gardening

Gardening is not only a fun-filled activity but also a great way to improve heart health and reduce the risks of high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and osteoporosis due to the light aerobic activities involved like pulling, digging, twisting, and bending.

Swimming

Swimming is not only extremely beneficial for health but also a fun, yet effective way to beat the summer heat. It is an ideal summer activity for senior residents because it presents lower physical risks.

Besides, it helps develop strong bones and muscles. In addition, it improves heart health, is gentle on the joints, and boosts mental health.

Visit a Nearby Lake or Park

Spending time near the lake, pool, or park is an affordable alternative to shopping or attending local events. Dip your feet in the water, ride a boat, or just enjoy the beauty of nature.

Trivia nights, movie nights, bird watching, outdoor picnics, and summer classes, are also fun summer activities that your loved ones in assisted living facilities can try.

Fathers Day Gift Guide For the Dads In Senior Housing

Father’s Day is an important occasion where we honor our father figures for everything that they have done for us. It is the day when we are extra thoughtful because we want them to know we care. However, planning on what to do and what to give can be a challenge if your dad, uncle, or friend is in senior housing. For most senior adults in senior homes, the gift of time from family the most treasured present that will be treasured forever.

Now that Father’s Day is approaching, what can you do with your loved one on that day?

Father’s Day is Just Around the Corner

Father’s Day has been celebrated as St. Joseph’s Day every 19th of March since the middle ages for Catholic countries in Europe.

In the United States, it is celebrated every third Sunday of June since 1910. Since then, many regions and countries in the world adopted the yearly celebration, but on various dates while some have maintained their traditions of honoring the pillars of the family.

The celebration of fatherhood in Catholic Europe dates to 1508. This was commonly celebrated on March 19 as the feast of St. Joseph, referred to in Catholicism as the “Nourisher of the Lord” and the recognized father of Jesus according to Southern Europe tradition.

The customary celebration was then brought by the Spanish and Portuguese to America which was actively supported by the Catholic Church. The Coptic Orthodox Church also celebrates fatherhood on St. Joseph’s Day.

Until today, fatherhood is celebrated worldwide every March 19, but on the third Sunday in June each year. This year, fathers in senior housing and the rest of the world will be honored on Sunday, June 19, 2022.

Gift Ideas for Dads in Senior Housing

Finding the perfect gift for your dad was easy back then. But now, it can be a challenge, particularly, if Dad, uncle, in-law, or someone dear to you lives in senior housing.

But here are some suggestions that will help you find the perfect gift for someone in a senior facility.

Prepared Meals

Give them the gift of freedom from preparing their meals. A month or two worth of prepared meals by a reliable food server will guarantee that your loved one is religiously following diet restrictions. Plus, most of these food caterers offer an array of meal plans to choose from with no minimum orders.

Emergency Tools/Kit

An emergency flashlight with a charging port can be an awesome gift and lifesaver for senior dads.

Survival Kit

This would be the perfect gift for dads who love to go fishing, camping, hiking, or going on adventures outdoor. Or even if not the adventurous type, a survival kit is still an investment since this is good to have at home or in the car in case of an emergency.

Back/Neck/Shoulder Massager

This is the ultimate Father’s Day gift that almost everyone in senior housing would want to have. This gadget can alleviate muscle tension, soreness, and fatigue for a relaxing day without leaving the comfort of the room.

Memory Assisted Living

The Importance of Recognizing Mental Health in Senior Housing

Millions of people around the world are struggling with mental health issues and people in senior housing are no exception. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and brings light to the challenges of mental illness and the importance of treatment.

The Importance of Mental Health for Seniors

Mental health is crucial in every stage of life but especially during the later years. As seniors step into late adulthood, many struggle to cope with the changes in their lives. Some of these changes include physical changes, loss of work, moving, and dealing with different medical conditions.

This can be very frustrating for anyone. This frustration can easily lead to anxiety and eventually, depression if not properly addressed.

According to the CDC, at least 7 million Americans over the age of 65 suffer from depression each year.

Some of the most common signs that a senior has mental health issues include a shift in mood, eating and sleeping habits, anger and irritability, and threat to harm self or others.

With that number, there’s a pressing need to highlight mental health as part of the healthcare goals for seniors. By having the right guidance and support, they will be able to adapt to life changes more easily, so they can enjoy their years in senior housing without battling anxiety and depression.

Different Mental Health Exercises in Senior Housing

To help seniors in senior housing battle mental health challenges, here are some exercises they can enjoy:

Taking on crafts.

  • Crafting is such a great way to not only prevent memory loss but also fight depression and anxiety. When you’re knitting, painting, or sewing, you allow your mind to be creative so that there’s no room for bad thoughts in your head.

Doing puzzles.

  • Puzzles are some of the most popular activities in senior housing because of their benefits to the mind and body. Aside from sharpening the memory, doing puzzles also help the mind relax and focus on a single activity. This is a great way to forget all those worries and just enjoy the moment.

Gardening.

  • Taking care of plants or growing vegetables are a great way to get the body moving and keep the mind healthy. According to several studies, gardening has been linked to reducing the risks of dementia and it’s also a good way to battle anxiety and depression because you’re outdoors and you keep yourself busy throughout the day.

Mental health is a crucial topic that everyone should talk about not only during Mental Health Awareness Month but every day.

With so many people suffering from mental illness, it’s about time that we give importance to our mental health, especially for those individuals who are living in senior housing and struggle with anxiety and depression on almost a daily basis.

Celebrating Mother’s Day in Assisted Living

No one in this world means more to anyone than their mother and in a few weeks, we will be honoring the women who brought us into this world on Mother’s Day. If your mom is already in assisted living, you need to make this year’s celebration one she will never forget. Here are some ideas that you can use to prepare for Mother’s Day and honor the most important woman in your life.

Gift Ideas for Mothers in Assisted Living

A photo bouquet.

  • While a typical floral bouquet will never go out of style, you can give it a twist this year by replacing the flowers with family photographs that your mother will surely love.

Cut your favorite photos into hearts and put them together into a bouquet that will bring the nostalgia, for sure.

Her favorite foods.

  • In assisted living, your mom doesn’t really get her favorite foods every day. So, why not make Mother’s Day a big treat for her, especially if she’s a foodie? Cook all her favorite foods and gather the family to visit her so you can enjoy lunch together.

The little comforts.

  • Being in her elderly years, your mom would want things that can add to her comfort and convenience. For instance, you can gift her a memory pillow that will help her to sleep better at night and not wake up having a stiff neck. If she’s into music, you can give her a pair of headphones to enjoy her favorite tunes privately in assisted living.

Ways to Celebrate with Mothers in Assisted Living

Organize a family picnic.

  • Gather all your family members and visit your mom together in assisted living where you can prepare a picnic with all her favorite foods. You can even organize a surprise tribute for your mom where each family member gets to say something to her or sing songs for her.

Treat her to pamper day.

  • Mother’s Day should be a day of pampering for the most precious woman in your life. Book for a pedicure or massage service that she can enjoy even when she’s in the facility. You can even get her hair done, so she can look and feel extra beautiful again.

Do her favorite activity with her.

  • If your mom loves painting, gardening, or crocheting, take the time to do her favorite activity with her on Mother’s Day. This may be a simple gesture for you, but it will surely mean a lot that you honor the things she loves to do.

Our mothers are true gems because of all their years of love and sacrifice to bring us into this world and make sure that we live a good life.

So, this Mother’s Day, make sure that your mother feels that you value her and everything she did to help you get to where you are. Being in assisted living is never easy for her, but you can take this one day to make her feel extra happy to be with family.

Memory Care Assisted Living

Do Different Seasons Have Different Effects on Alzheimer’s and Dementia? | Fallbrook Memory Care Facility

Changes in behavior with age can be natural.  However, there are some behavior changes that can link to dementia or Alzheimer’s.  With changing behaviors, there are some outside factors that can take effect on this.

Research shows that seasonal changes can impact the habits and demeanors of dementia patients. Do you have a family member who exhibits behavioral change?

It can truly affect the lives of those suffering from seasonal change, but the situation is manageable by understanding the cause and possible treatments.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia Diagnosis | Fallbrook Memory Care Facility

The term dementia covers several disorders. Each shows a decline in cognitive function that leads to changes in personality, memory, daily performance, or communication skills. Alzheimer’s on the other hand, is the most common type of dementia.

Patients that show symptoms of memory loss may be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, mixed dementia, Huntington’s disease, or Parkinson’s dementia.

Being the most common type of dementia, Alzheimer’s takes up 60-80% of all dementia cases. Although commonly observed in senior adults from 65 years and up, Alzheimer’s is also noted in the younger population with about 200,000 cases. And up to now, researchers are still working on determining what causes Alzheimer’s.

Can the Seasons Affect Alzheimer’s and Dementia?

Yes, particularly during the cold winter months. The yearly change of season especially when days are shorter severely impacts patients in Fallbrook Memory Care Facility. The extended hours of darkness can cause increased agitation, confusion, depression, irritability, wandering, and sleep disturbance.

Although this can be challenging, caregivers and loved ones can handle these effects. Regardless of what the season is, patients with dementia need to have a stable routine.

Listening to soothing music, the use of essential oils or other sleep aids can help combat the effects of changing seasons. Or better yet talk to a physician to help better understand the phenomenon as well as other ways to manage the symptoms safely and effectively.

How a Memory Care Facility Can Help Monitor Disease Progress

Senior adults suffering from Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia will have an easy and comfortable way of coping with this difficult health condition when in a specialized institution like Fallbrook Memory Care Facility. How to Recognize Stress in Assisted Living Facilities

Stress is a normal part of life and senior residents from assisted living facilities are no exception. Sometimes, stress can be a motivating factor to get the job done. It allows you to stay focused, and alert, and can even help humans in challenging situations.

However, stress can also negatively affect one’s mental and emotional health if not dealt with properly. Stress can also cause depression, anxiety, sleep disorder, heart problems, relationship issues, and more.

Thus, it is important to identify stress and its causes to begin finding ways to combat them. Even the small ways can go a long way in living a positive life.

Stress Awareness Month

Stress Awareness Month has been celebrated every April since 1992 worldwide to spread awareness of the causes and curative ways of the stress pandemic.

When stress gets out of control can lead to serious illnesses. People have different levels of stress tolerance, but regardless, stressors can be approachable.

For the last 2 years, in particular, this month is highly important for navigating the pandemic. People across the globe including the residents in assisted living facilities struggled to cope with the health scare, limited to no physical contact with families and the outside world, trauma, and uncertainties.

Because of these, this month provides healthy and helpful ways to cope or at least reduce stress. Because recognizing stress is the first step toward feeling better and lowering its dangers.

Why Identifying Stress is Important

Many people do not realize that they are suffering from stress, and it is too late that stress has already consumed them. Sometimes the impacts of stress do not show directly. It could come in the form of stress eating, and feelings of isolation and anxiety. Having emotions like these at high levels can be risky for senior residents in assisted living facilities.

Although you can not entirely avoid stress, being able to spot the signs can save one’s health. Identifying the triggers also limits the amount of stress that one will be subject to. In addition, it will allow individuals to come up with ways to alleviate stress and improve their mood, and overall health.

Ways to Identify Stress in Assisted Living Facilities

Prolonged isolation and health risks are common factors that affect the mood and mental health of senior residents. And if left unaddressed, can alleviate conditions like hypertension, insomnia, or malnutrition.

Caregivers and staff must observe and better recognize stress among residents.

Daily caregivers look out for:

  • signs of depression, loneliness, or isolation (loss of interest in socializing, attending activities and engagements)
  • lack of energy and motivation
  • loss of appetite or sudden weight loss (skipping meals)
  • difficulty sleeping, oversleeping, or daytime sleepiness
  • neglecting personal hygiene or forgetting medicine

Management and staff in assisted living facilities should have special programs and activities to help their residents with elderly depression.

Other than programs, emotional support is necessary once these signs are identified by family members. Plus, get an accurate diagnosis by accompanying loved ones to doctor’s appointments to receive appropriate treatment.

Nursing Homes

The Importance of Social Interaction in Senior Housing

Retirement comes with pros and cons. It means the freedom to do whatever you want. However, retirement also means spending more time alone or being cooped up at home due to mobility issues which often leads to loneliness and depression. Older adults in senior housing must maintain social interaction for their emotional and mental health.

Keeping relationships and spending adequate time with family and friends keep the senior adults’ minds active. Spending quality time is good for the heart and brain.

How Social Interaction Affects Us

Research shows that spending time with your support group fosters mental and emotional well-being. Social interaction is also an important aspect of adult life and as people age with the following benefits.

  • Social engagement can help boost memory formation. In addition, it protects the brain from neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Social interaction develops better and healthy habits, particularly when doing something difficult because of the encouragement from others. It can lighten the mood and make people happier.
  • Enjoying constant communication with family members, friends, or colleagues can make people happy. Aside from diet and lifestyle, the research found that SuperAgers appeared to be socially active. When constantly surrounded by the people dear to you, being socially connected is one important element to a longer life.
  • Social interaction fosters the feeling of belonging, safety, and security.

Why Social Interaction is Critical for Residents in Senior Housing

Older adults in senior housing should spend a few hours of social interaction each week to brighten up their mood and overall health. Family members should encourage their loved ones even those with limited mobility.

Boosts Brain Health

  • Social interaction can keep seniors mentally stimulated and be aware of their surroundings. Being socially active can also improve seniors’ communication skills while preventing Alzheimer’s and dementia-related disease. Constant communication will also enhance senior adults’ networks that they can rely upon in the future.

Lowers Risks of Isolation and Depression

  • Residents in senior housing must maintain relationships with their fellow residents, friends, or family members so they can openly discuss how they are feeling or the things that are going on with their lives. Having no one to talk to or a strong support group often leads to loneliness, isolation, boredom, and poor decision makings.

Better Health

  • Limited or failing to interact with the people around can lead to increased stress levels resulting in the development of serious illnesses. Also, having a strong support group promotes healthier habits like mental engagement, eating on time and hearty food, regular excise, and other important lifestyle choices.

Ways to Stay Engaged from Afar

Despite the challenges brought by the COVID19 pandemic, staying socially active should not be hindered. In today’s digital age, there are numerous ways to stay connected to your network from afar.

Video calling and messaging are easily available to keep in touch. Regardless of time zone differences, senior housing residents can still nurture relationships and carry on with meaningful conversations.

Even not so techy adults can still take advantage of the virtual world through emails and social media messaging. But if these are too much, seniors can always resort to phone calls.

How Residents in Nursing Homes Can Prepare for Spring!

If you have been looking forward to the warmer weather, surely you have been waiting for spring to arrive. Although the winter months have been part of your life ever since the cold dark months can take a hit on your mental and emotional health.

But do not worry, you will see the sun more often while making most of the new season by doing fun activities even in nursing homes and spending more time outdoors.

Springtime in Nursing Homes

Springtime is the season of fresh flowers, new opportunities, and new beginnings, thus worth celebrating. Residents in nursing homes are excited about all the fun it brings that they can share with their friends and family.

The excitement of welcoming spring is the natural effect of the warmer days. According to a study done by the University of Michigan, people who spend at least 30 minutes outdoor in warmer weather have a better mindset, reduced stress levels, and are happier.

People feel a lot better when there is more sunlight and days are longer. Spring weather encourages people to engage in physical activities which lead to endorphins boost – the “feel-good” hormones.

In addition, exposure to sunlight is said to boost the release of serotonin which is responsible for boosting a person’s mood, feeling more focused and calmer.

With enough sun exposure, senior adults are less likely to feel major depression linked to seasonal patterns. Furthermore, exposure to sunlight at least 5-15 minutes at least three times a week is enough to get that needed vitamin D boost.

Sunshine can make people happy.

Ways to Welcome Spring in Nursing Homes

Transition your apartments or rooms that match the rejuvenating energy the spring season brings with these tips:

Bringing in Spring Scents

It is time to swap out those holiday candles with spring-scented candles like floral, citrus, berries, sunshine bloom, orange, green tea, banana, and vanilla to liven up your space. If scented candles are not available, you can simply switch to pastel-colored candles.

Getting Flowers & Succulents

Bring in the blooms indoors. Adding fresh flowers like seasonal blooms throughout the season in different areas in your home is the cheapest and quickest way to give your space a beautiful upgrade. You can stick to in-season flowers or mix with succulents. Whatever suits your taste; you cannot go wrong with fresh flowers and succulents.

Switching Out Home Linens with Spring Colors

Put away the thick and heavy curtains, blankets, and faux fur. Instead, residents in nursing homes can use light and cotton fabrics for that light and airy bedroom. Also, pick the colors of spring, like yellow, warm greens, orangey reds, beige, and peaches to add a pop of color at the same time making your room feel bigger.

Closet Cleanout

It’s time to give up those thermals, fleece, sweatshirt, and long-sleeve tops. Give your closet an update by adding a lightweight jacket for chilly mornings or nights. Go for dresses, shorts, and other pieces made of cotton or linen to allow airflow during hot days.
